Inspiring Future Generations as we Celebrate Women's History Month

As parents, we all want our daughters to grow up feeling empowered and confident in themselves and their abilities.

During the month of March, the world celebrates Women's History Month as well as International Women's Day.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality and to consider how we can continue to support and inspire our daughters to achieve their dreams.

Here are some ideas for parents to celebrate with their daughters:

  1. Teach them about women's history: Take the time to teach your daughters about the contributions that women have made throughout history. Share stories of women who have made a difference in their communities, countries, and the world. This can help them understand the importance of women's rights and the ongoing struggle for gender equality. National Geographic Kids lists notable women HERE.

  2. Encourage them to pursue their passions: Girls should be encouraged to pursue their interests and passions without limitations. Encourage your daughter to explore different fields and hobbies, regardless of whether they are traditionally considered "feminine" or "masculine". If your daughter shows an interest in science, technology, engineering, or math, support her in pursuing those fields. Bricks 4 Kidz has a wonderful article about helping your child explore their interests HERE.

  3. Learn about successful women entrepreneurs: Provide opportunities for your daughter to learn about, meet, and have conversations with women who have had success in entrepreneurship. This can help reinforce the idea that women are capable and successful entrepreneurs. Learn about 5 successful entrepreneurs HERE.

  4. Talk about gender stereotypes: Discuss with your daughter the different stereotypes that exist around gender roles and how they can be limiting. Encourage them to challenge these stereotypes and break free from gender expectations. For example, if your daughter wants to play sports, encourage her to do so, even if it goes against traditional gender roles. "The Bump" has a great article on ways to tackle gender stereotypes HERE.

  5. Model gender equality at home: Make sure that your daughter sees gender equality in action at home. Share household chores and responsibilities equally between all family members, regardless of gender. Avoid making comments or jokes that reinforce gender stereotypes, and instead promote equality and respect. A great guide to modeling gender equality at home can be found HERE.

By celebrating women, we take time to recognize women's contributions, raise awareness about the past and present struggles women face, promote gender equality, inspire future generations, and build community.

We would love to see how you and your family are celebrating Women's History Month!
